About us

Jefferson Township is a local government located in northeast Franklin County, serving an area of approximately 15.34 square miles with 14,000 residents and 50+ businesses. We have approximately 55 employees ranging from administrative staff to crew members in our service department and firefighter/paramedics. The Zoning and Building Department supervises all residential and commercial building and development activity in the unincorporated portion of Jefferson Township, including permits for new construction, enforcement of zoning regulations. Additionally, the department supports the appointed members of the Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals on the cases they hear.


We are seeking a full-time assistant zoning inspector to provide support to the zoning administrator in accomplishing both routine duties and special projects related to residential and commercial building and development activity in the unincorporated portion of Jefferson Township. About you

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn detailed zoning regulations, rules, and procedures including relevant state and local laws
  • Analytical, organized, and detail oriented
  • Able to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions 
  • Adaptable and able to perform with frequent interruptions, often changing from one task to another
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and the ability to make presentations to diverse audiences
  • Ability to interpret codes, maps, site plans, and construction documents
  • Ability to conduct field inspections, often navigating uneven terrain, squatting, bending, kneeling, and reaching
  • Enthusiastic about new learning opportunities and challenges
  • Experience with performing field inspections of construction sites or a willingness to learn
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suit including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Experience operating cloud-based software preferred
  • Possession of a valid Ohio Class D Driver’s License
  • High school degree or equivalent required
  • Degree or major coursework related to planning and/or land use preferred

Essential responsibilities

  • Uses understanding of construction drawings and drafting aides to review zoning permit applications to ensure that proposals are compliant with the zoning resolution
  • Performs progress set-back inspections for new single-family residential construction
  • Performs final zoning compliance inspections for minor compliance permits and accessory structure compliance permits
  • Investigates complaints made by public regarding zoning violations
  • Observes and documents zoning violations
  • Maintains zoning violation complaint logs and writes notices of zoning violations
  • Tends to public inquiry by phone, email, or in-person appearance
  • Provides professional and courteous customer service
  • Assists Zoning Administrator/Inspector with applications for rezoning, variances, conditional uses, text and map amendments to the zoning resolution, and other cases heard before the Board of Zoning Appeals and Zoning Commission
