The OTA is proud to offer our new member training program to all members at no cost! This set of 10 sessions will help you learn and understand your duties as an elected official while providing tips, resources, and wisdom from experts in the realm of townships. Below, you will find each session, including any additional resources about the topic. This course is suitable for both current and new members and can provide valuable insight into the workings of township government, enabling our members to contribute meaningfully and actively to their communities.

OTA Communications

The OTA sends out emails through Constant Contact, a communications platform. To make sure you continue to receive our emails, follow these quick tips:

  • Add "@ohiotownships.org" to your safe senders list on your email service.
  • Periodically check your junk folder. If you see any of our emails, make sure to right-click them and flag them as "Safe" or "Not Spam."
  • Interact with our emails! Inactive recipients can be unintentionally dropped from receiving emails if they go a certain amount of time without opening emails or clicking links. Make sure you continue to get our emails by opening and interacting with them.

Important Township Links

OTA Links Page – This page houses links for sister associations, township resources, and partnered programs with the OTA.

Township Handbook – The Ohio Auditor of State compiles the Township Handbook to give best practices and answer frequently asked questions for common township issues.

Ohio Revised Code – The Ohio Revised Code gives townships their authority. The bulk of township code can be found in Title 5, but information on townships can also be found in Titles 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9.

Ohio Sunshine Laws Manual – The Ohio Attorney General requires training on public records for every elected official, otherwise known as the Sunshine Laws. This document is updated every few years.

Sourcebooks, Roads Brochures, and History & Functions Brochures – The OTA has partnered with Miami University's CPMRA to produce Sourcebooks for Trustees, Fiscal Officers, Zoning, and Personnel. The OTA has also published brochures on Road Responsibilities for Townships and The History & Functions of Ohio's Townships.

Cox Report ("Ohio's Townships: Spending, Taxing & Borrowing Less") – The OTA commissioned a report on the functions of Ohio's townships from Wendell Cox, Principal of Demographia (an international urban policy firm). The result was a study that provided significant proof of the value and efficiency of township government.

OTA Merchandise – Check out our store and pick up some OTA SWAG! From merchandise like padfolios, bumper stickers, and beanies, to important resources for job duties and township education, our store has a lot to offer.

OTA Webinar Archive – The OTA hosts monthly workshops to further educate township officials and employees on pertinent subjects. After the workshop, a recording of the webinar is posted to our Resource Center, where attendees or subscribers can view them anytime. They are also available for purchase.
