Madison Township, (Franklin County) Ohio is seeking candidates for the position of Police Commander. Madison Township is one of seventeen (17) townships situated in the southeast corner of Franklin County, bordered by Fairfield and Pickaway Counties. The annual salary range for this position is $95,000.00+ based on qualifications. Full benefits package available, including medical, Rx, dental, vision, life, EAP, and OPERS-LE pension system. This position is classified as exempt/non-bargaining.

The Community:

The current population of the township is estimated by the Ohio Department of Development at 26,299, including 11,643 residents in unincorporated portions of the township. The township encompasses an area of 40.6 square miles. In addition, the following municipalities lie, in parts, within the boundaries of Madison Township: City of Columbus, City of Groveport, City of Canal Winchester, Village of Obetz, Village of Lithopolis, City of Pickerington. Madison Township is also home to two area high schools: Groveport-Madison High School and Canal Winchester High School. The township is governed per the Ohio Revised Code, chapter 505, with a governing board of three (3) township trustees, a fiscal officer, and a township administrator.


A valid Ohio driver’s license; certification as a police officer in the State of Ohio, minimum of ten (10) years law enforcement experience with at least five (5) years of full-time paid law enforcement at a command level. An Associate degree in the field related to law enforcement, with a BA, BS, or higher is preferred. Alternative combinations of education, such as FBI Academy, Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC), Southern Police Institute (SPI), Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE), or the Police Executive Leadership of College (PELC) may be substituted for a degree.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

Candidates must have strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, with other municipal departments, the community, and with local, state, and federal agencies. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the administration of a township police department and the principles and practices of modern police science. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in leadership, budgeting, problem solving, training, disciplinary procedures, decision-making, and public relations.
