Ohio LTAP Offers Gravel Roads Maintenance Workshops
The Ohio Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) will offer three Gravel Roads Maintenance workshops in October designed to help local officials and employees better understand the principles behind building and maintaining quality gravel roads.
Good gravel road maintenance and rehabilitation depend on two basic principles: proper grading and compaction and the use of quality surface gravel. While shaping a road with a grader may seem straightforward, proper methods are not always obvious. The amount and quality of gravel needed, along with effective drainage, can also have a major impact on road performance.
This course will provide participants with a better understanding of what makes a good gravel road, how quality surface gravel performs and why proper drainage is the foundation of effective gravel road maintenance. The workshop will also cover innovations in the gravel road maintenance and rehabilitation industry, commonly used tools and cost-effective methods for road stabilization.
Who should attend? The workshop is intended for public employees and officials responsible for funding, maintaining or overseeing gravel roads and communicating with the public about their maintenance. This includes township and county personnel and elected officials.
Instructor: Matt Ulberg, PE, serves on the Transportation Research Board Committee on Low Volume Roads and has more than 30 years of experience in the transportation industry, including more than nine years as Director of the Montana LTAP Center.
