BWC Re-Opens Grant for the Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Program

On July 1, 2025, the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) re-opened the Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements (FEEEG) Grant Program. The FEEEG Program helps Ohio employers minimize firefighter exposure to dangerous environmental elements. As part of the BWC’s Safety Intervention Grant, FEEEG is available only to Ohio firefighter employers.

Eligible employers may receive up to $15,000 for each three-year eligibility cycle. The BWC will provide a 5-to1 matching for eligible employers who report annual payroll of $500,000 or more. Meaning, for every $1 the employer contributes, the BWC will contribute $5, up to the maximum of $15,000. For eligible employers with less than $500,000 in annual payroll, the BWC does not require a match. Therefore, there is no required contribution from the employer to receive the $15,000 Grant.

FEEEG funds are available to eligible Ohio employers who wish to purchase any of these qualified items:

  • Diesel exhaust systems
  • Extractors/Washing machines for turnout gear or personal protective equipment
  • Hoods with barrier protection
  • Turnout gear for volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS units (new this year)
  • Turnout gear drying machines
  • Washable gloves (structural firefighter gloves)

New this year - the BWC requires three vendor quotes or one quote with a sole source justification for the proposed intervention. Additionally, previously submitted applications will not carry over to this new grant program. Applicants must submit a new application to be considered.
